 हिरासत में ले लिया। भिखारी उस पर दया करने के लिए रो रहा था। उसने कहा कि उसके पास खाने के लिए कुछ नहीं है। वह आठ साल तक स्कूल में शिक्षक रहे थे। लेकिन वह जगह गंवा बैठे।

भिखारी लत्ता में था। उसकी सुस्त और शराबी आँखें थीं। उसके दोनों गालों पर लाल धब्बा था। उसने एक ऊंचा और एक नीचा जूता पहना था।

सर्गेई ने भिखारी को पहचान लिया। उसने उसे बताया कि वह उससे सदोव्या गली में मिला था। तब उन्होंने खुद को छात्र बताया था। सर्गेई ने उसे चेतावनी दी कि वह पुलिस को बुलाएगा। भिखारी ने स्वीकार किया और सच कहा।

भिखारी ने सर्गेई से काम मांगा। सर्गेई ने भिखारी से उसके लिए लकड़ी काटने को कहा जब उसने काम मांगा। भिखारी अनिच्छा से उस काम को करने के लिए तैयार हो गया। भिखारी को सर्गेई का नौकर ओल्गा शेड में ले गया। उसे वहाँ लकड़ियाँ काटनी थी। सर्गेई ओल्गा और भिखारी को शेड में देख सकता था।

ओल्गा ने भिखारी को एक कुल्हाड़ी दी। लेकिन उसके चेहरे के भाव देखकर उसने उसे डांटा। भिखारी ने अपने पांवों के बीच लकडी का एक खंभा रखा, फिर उसे कुल्हाड़ी से जोर से मारा। बिलेट नीचे गिर गया। इस बीच, सर्गेई चला गया। उसने एक शराबी और बिगड़ैल आदमी को ठंड में काम पर बिठाया था। इसका उसे मलाल होने लगा।

सर्गेई को भिखारी के लिए काम मिल गया। भिखारी हर महीने की पहली तारीख को लकड़ी काटता था। वह बर्फ फावड़ा भी करेगा। उन्हें चाहिए । आसनों और गद्दों से धूल झाड़ें। वह लकड़ी के शेड को क्रम में रखता था। सर्गेई ' दूसरे घर में चला गया। भिखारी ने फर्नीचर पैक किया और ले गया।

लशकॉफ, भिखारी, को अब अन्य रोजगार की पेशकश की गई थी। सर्गेई ने उसे अपने दोस्त के पास जाने के लिए कहा। वहाँ उसे कुछ नकल का काम दिया जाएगा जैसा कि वह लिख सकता था। सर्गेई खुश था क्योंकि उसने एक आदमी को सही रास्ते पर रखा था।

दो साल हो गए। एक शाम सर्गेई एक थिएटर की टिकट खिड़की पर खड़ा था। वह अपनी सीट के लिए भुगतान कर रहा था। उसने अपने बगल में एक छोटा आदमी देखा। उस आदमी ने एक घुँघराला फर और एक घिसी-पिटी सील की चमड़ी की टोपी पहनी थी। सर्गेई ने उसे पहचान लिया। उसने उससे पूछा कि वह कैसा था।

 

लशकॉफ ने सर्गेई को बताया कि वह उस समय एक नोटरी थे। उन्हें एक महीने में पैंतीस रूबल का भुगतान किया गया था। सर्गेई उसकी बात सुनकर बहुत खुश हुआ। लशकॉफ ने सर्गेई को उनके लिए जो कुछ किया उसके लिए धन्यवाद दिया। उसने सर्गेई से कहा कि अगर उसने उसकी मदद नहीं की होती, तो वह अब भी झूठ बोल रहा होता। उन्होंने रसोइया सर्गेई और ओल्गा को धन्यवाद दिया। उसने सर्गेई को बताया कि ओल्गा ने वास्तव में उसे बचाया था।

 

लशकॉफ ने सर्गेई से कहा कि ओल्गा उसे डांटेगी। तब वह उसके सामने बैठ जाती और रोती। वह उसे तरह-तरह के नामों से पुकारती थी। वह उदास भी हो जाएगी। तब वह उसके लिए लकड़ी काटती थी। उसने सर्गेई को यह कहकर चकित कर दिया कि उसने उसके लिए लकड़ी की एक भी छड़ी नहीं काटी। ओल्गा की हरकतों से उसके हृदय में परिवर्तन आ गया। वह ओल्गा द्वारा ठीक किया गया था और वह उसे नहीं भूलेगा। उसने सर्गेई से कहा कि यह घंटी बजने का समय है। और वह गैलरी में चला गया।

The Beggar Summary In English

Advocate Sergei was detained by a beggar one day. The beggar was crying to have pity on him. He said that he had nothing to eat. He had been a school teacher for eight years. But he lost the place.

The beggar was in rags. He had dull and drunken eyes. He had the red spot on either cheek. He wore one high and one low shoe.

Sergei recognised the beggar. He told him that he had met him in Sadovya street. Then he had called himself a student. Sergei warned him that he would send for the police. The beggar admitted and told the truth.

The beggar asked Sergei for work. Sergei asked the beggar to chop wood for him when he asked for work. The beggar agreed to do that work, though unwillingly. The beggar was s taken by Sergei’s servant Olga to the shed. He had to chop woods there. Sergei could see Olga and the beggar in the shed.

Olga gave the beggar an axe. But seeing the expression on his face, she scolded him. The beggar put a billet of wood between his feet, Then he struck it feebly with his axe. The billet fell down. Meanwhile, Sergei went away. He had set a drunken and spoiled man at work in the cold. He began to feel sorry for it.

Sergei found work for the beggar. The beggar would cut the wood on the first of every month. He would also shovel snow. He would . beat dust out of the rugs and mattresses. He would put the wood-shed in order. Sergei ’ moved into another house. The beggar packed and carried the furniture.

Lushkoff, the beggar, was now offered other employment. Sergei asked him to go to his friend. There he would be given some copying work as he could write. Sergei was happy as he had put a man on the right path.

Two years went by. One evening Sergei was standing at a ticket window of a theatre. He was paying for his seat. He saw a little man beside him. That man wore a curly fur and a worn sealskin cap. Sergei recognised him. He asked him how he was.

Lushkoff told Sergei that he was a notary then. He was paid thirty-five roubles a month. Sergei was very pleased to hear him. Lushkoff thanked Sergei for what he had done for him. He told Sergei that if he had not helped him, he would have still been telling lies. He thanked Sergei and Olga, the cook. He told Sergei that Olga had actually saved him.

Lushkoff told Sergei that Olga would rebuke him. Then she would sit opposite to him and weep. She would call him various names. She would grow sad also. Then she would chop the wood for him. He amazed Sergei by saying that he didn’t chop a single stick of wood for him. Due to Olga’s actions, there came a change in his heart. He was set right by Olga and he won’t forget her. He told Sergei that it was time for the bell. And he departed to the gallery.
